So earlier today, I called Chase to cancel my Chase Sapphire Preferred card. I've had this card for about 4-5 years and truly loved this card (with annual spending of about $24K-$30K on this card; balance paid in full every month). But they reduced the benefits on this card little more than a year ago, and since then AMEX Premier Rewards Gold card beefed up its benefits, so I pulled the trigger on AMEX Premier Rewards Gold card last week.

Anyway, I called Chase with full intention of canceling this card. But as soon as I communicated my intention, the service rep offered one time statement credit of $60 to keep my account open. Now, the annual fee on Sapphire Preferred is $95/yr, so technically, $60 credit won't fully cover that annual fee, but I thought it was a decent offer to keep my account open. However, since AMEX Premier Rewards Gold comes with $195/yr annual fee, I had no intention of keeping Chase account open with annual fee. So instead, I took the other option offered to me, which is to downgrade my Sapphire Preferred to the regular Sapphire (no annual fee). Chase no longer offers the regular Sapphire card to new customers, so this was a mild surprise.

So for anyone, who is on the fence about keeping their Sapphire Preferred card, it might be a decent shot to call Chase and communicate that you are calling to cancel your card. If they ask why, maybe you can tell them that because AMEX Premier Rewards Gold card recently beefed up its benefits (including 2X pts on dining, no forex fee, $100 airline fee credit etc), you are going to cancel Sapphire Preferred and apply for the Gold card instead, and see if Chase offers you the retention offer. If you are on the fence about keeping your card, you have nothing to lose by calling Chase to get such offer.
